Termites cause more damage to Australian homes than fires, floods and storms combined. The Illawarra coast — with its mix of bushland, coastal moisture and timber-framed housing — is solidly in their preferred habitat. If you own a home in Shell Cove, Shellharbour, Albion Park or Kiama, knowing the warning signs could save you tens of thousands of dollars in repairs.
And remember — home insurance does not cover termite damage. Almost every Australian policy excludes it. Prevention and early detection are the only protection.
1. Mud tubes on brick piers or slab edges
Subterranean termites build pencil-thin “mud leads” — earth-coloured tubes that run up brick piers, slab edges, sub-floor walls and sometimes inside wall cavities. They’re how termites travel from the soil to your timber without exposing themselves to air. If you spot one, do not break it open — termites will simply abandon that route and re-establish somewhere harder to find.
2. Hollow-sounding skirting boards or door frames
Termites eat timber from the inside out. A skirting board, architrave or door frame that looks fine on the surface can be a paper-thin shell. Tap suspect timber with a screwdriver handle — a hollow, papery sound is a serious warning sign. This is especially common in older Shellharbour weatherboard homes and brick-veneer extensions.
3. Rippling, blistered or sagging paint
Often mistaken for water damage. Termite galleries running just under painted surfaces cause the paint to ripple or blister as the timber underneath is eaten away. Look closely at skirting boards, window sills and door reveals.
4. Discarded wings near windows or light fittings
In spring and early summer, termite colonies send out swarms of winged “alates” looking to start new colonies. They’re attracted to lights and warmth, drop their wings shortly after landing, and leave little piles of identical translucent wings near windowsills, sliding door tracks and around light fittings. If you find these, there’s an active colony nearby — possibly on your property.
5. Small piles of timber-coloured droppings (frass)
Drywood termites (less common in the Illawarra but possible) push their droppings out of small holes. The frass looks like fine sawdust or coffee grounds, often found under decks, in roof voids or near skirting boards.
6. Tight doors and windows that suddenly stick
As termites tunnel through door and window frames, the timber warps slightly. Doors that used to close fine start sticking, latches stop aligning, windows become hard to open. This is easy to dismiss as humidity — but if it appears suddenly and persists, investigate.
7. Faint clicking or rustling inside walls
Soldier termites bang their heads against the timber when disturbed — a defence signal to the colony. If you press an ear to a wall in a quiet room and hear faint clicking, that’s a serious red flag.
Why Shell Cove and Shellharbour homes are at risk
Three factors stack the deck on the Illawarra coast:
- Climate. Mild winters and humid summers keep termite colonies active most of the year.
- Proximity to bushland. Escarpment reserves, lake-edge vegetation and street trees all host native termite colonies.
- Housing stock. Older brick-veneer and timber-framed homes — common throughout Shellharbour — are exactly what termites prefer.
What to do if you spot the signs
- Don’t disturb the area. No spraying, no breaking mud tubes, no removing damaged timber. Termites will retreat and you’ll lose the trail.
- Don’t wait. A small colony today is a major repair bill in 12 months.
- Book a professional inspection. A qualified inspector uses moisture meters, thermal imaging and physical inspection of sub-floor and roof void to map the situation properly.
What to do if you spot the signs
Termite inspections and treatments aren’t part of what PestAGuard offers — they’re a specialist field with their own licensing, and we’d rather you have someone who does it day in, day out. If you suspect termites, give Michael a call on 0420 222 136 and he’ll point you toward a trusted local termite specialist.
