The Illawarra coast — Shell Cove, Shellharbour, Albion Park, Kiama and surrounds — has a humid, mild climate that keeps pests active almost year-round. But each season brings its own set of usual suspects. Knowing what to expect makes prevention much easier.
Summer — cockroaches, ants & mosquitoes
Hot, humid summer nights along the coast are peak pest season. Cockroach and ant activity surges, and mosquito populations boom around the lake and any standing water.
- Cockroaches: store food in sealed containers, clean up crumbs, fix leaky pipes, seal gaps around sinks. See our cockroach control page if it’s beyond DIY.
- Ants: wipe surfaces, seal cracks, deal with trails fast before they multiply.
- Mosquitoes: empty anything that holds water — bird baths, plant saucers, blocked gutters. Screen your windows.
Autumn — rodents & spiders
As the weather cools, rats, mice and spiders start moving indoors. This is the single most common time of year for rodent call-outs across Shellharbour.
- Rodents: seal weep holes, garage door gaps and roof tile gaps. Keep firewood and timber stacks well away from the house. Listen for scratching at night. Full program details: rodent control in Shell Cove & Shellharbour.
- Spiders: vacuum webs, declutter sheds and garages, knock back the insects spiders feed on.
Winter — rodents (still) & silverfish

Rodent pressure continues through winter — they’re warm inside your ceiling. Silverfish thrive in damp Illawarra bathrooms and laundries.
- Rodents: steel-wool any new gaps, check the roof void if you can do it safely, watch for droppings.
- Silverfish: reduce humidity with a dehumidifier, ventilate, store books and clothes in sealed containers.
Spring — termites & wasps
Spring is the danger season for termites — colonies swarm and look for new sites. This is the right time for your annual termite inspection.
- Termites: keep timber away from the slab, fix leaks, book an inspection — see termite inspections in Shell Cove & Shellharbour.
- Wasps: paper-wasp nests under eaves and European wasps near rubbish bins. Don’t disturb a nest — call for safe removal.
Year-round basics
- Keep the kitchen clean and store food properly.
- Seal entry points around doors, windows and utility lines.
- Manage moisture — fix leaks, ventilate, clean gutters.
- Book a professional inspection at least annually (twice a year in bushland/lake-edge properties).
