Cold months along the Illawarra coast drive rats and mice straight into your roof, sub-floor and wall cavities. By the time you hear scratching above the bedroom ceiling, you are usually well past the “single mouse” stage — rodents breed quickly and one undetected pair can become a colony of 50+ inside three months. Damage to insulation, electrical wiring and stored food adds up fast.
Signs you have rodents
- Scratching, scurrying or thumping in the ceiling at night
- Droppings under the sink, in the pantry, in the garage or along skirting boards
- Gnaw marks on food packaging, timber framing or plastic conduit
- A distinct musky or ammonia smell — usually in confined spaces
- Greasy “rub marks” along walls where rodents follow the same path
- Pets fixated on a wall, vent or appliance for no obvious reason
Why supermarket baits are not enough
Snap traps and pellet baits will catch the curious individuals — but they do not address why the rodents got in, where they are nesting, or how to stop the next wave coming through the same entry point. A proper rodent program is part eradication, part exclusion.
Our rodent program
- Property inspection — we identify rat vs mouse, locate nesting sites in the roof void and sub-floor, and map every entry point (weep holes, roof tile gaps, gaps around plumbing penetrations, garage door seals).
- Bait stations — lockable, tamper-resistant stations placed in roof voids, sub-floors and external perimeter. Safe around children and pets — they cannot access the bait.
- Exclusion advice — written report on what to seal and how, so once the colony is gone it stays gone.
- Follow-up — we check and re-bait stations on schedule, especially through autumn and winter when activity peaks.
Common entry points we find
- Gaps under garage doors and roller doors
- Weep holes without rodent mesh
- Roof tile valleys, dormer junctions and broken ridge caps
- Holes around plumbing and air-con line penetrations
- Subfloor vents with broken or missing mesh
- Coastal and lake-edge properties: timber stacks and sheds within 5 metres of the house
Areas we cover
Shell Cove, Shellharbour Village, Albion Park, Oak Flats, Flinders, Warilla, Barrack Heights, Lake Illawarra, Blackbutt and Kiama.

Frequently asked questions
Is the bait safe around my dog?
Yes. We only use bait inside lockable tamper-resistant stations. Dogs, cats and kids cannot get to it. We never use loose bait in places pets could reach.
What if a rat dies in the ceiling?
Modern baits are designed so rodents seek water before dying — most leave the property. If something does die in a wall or roof void, the smell typically clears in 7–10 days. We can advise on ventilation if it is severe.
Do I need treatment every year?
If you live near bushland, near the lake, or have had rodents before — yes, an annual top-up before autumn keeps the colony from re-establishing. Other properties usually only need treatment when activity returns.
