If you live around Shell Cove, Shellharbour or anywhere along the Illawarra coast, you’ll know pests come with the territory. The mix of warm coastal weather, bushland reserves, lake-edge moisture and timber-framed homes makes the area great for living — and great for cockroaches, termites, rodents, ants and spiders. Catching them early is far cheaper than dealing with an established problem.
The most common pests we see locally
1. Termites
Termites are the worst pest most Illawarra homeowners ever deal with. Subterranean species like Coptotermes and Schedorhinotermes chew through timber framing silently — by the time you spot damage, it’s usually significant. Insurance does not cover it.
- Signs: mud tubes on brick piers, hollow-sounding skirting boards, rippling paint, discarded wings near windows after a swarm.
- Prevention: keep timber and mulch away from the slab, fix leaks fast, book an annual inspection.

2. Cockroaches
The most common call-out across the Illawarra. German cockroaches breed inside, Australian and Smokybrown roaches come in from gardens and roof voids, and humid summer nights bring out the lot.
- Signs: droppings like coffee grounds, a musty smell, sightings at night when you flick the light on.
- Prevention: seal cracks, store food in airtight containers, fix sub-floor moisture issues.

2. Rats & Mice
Rodent activity ramps up every autumn as the temperature drops. Lake-edge and bushland-adjacent properties see the most pressure. Rats chew through wiring (a real fire risk), insulation and food packaging.
- Signs: scratching in the ceiling at night, droppings, greasy rub marks along skirting, pets fixated on a wall.
- Prevention: seal weep holes and roof gaps, store food in metal/glass, keep timber stacks well away from the house.

3. Ants
Sugar ants, black house ants and coastal brown ants are the usual suspects in Shellharbour homes. They come inside through cracks and follow scent trails to food.
- Prevention: wipe surfaces (especially around kettles and bins), seal small cracks, don’t leave pet food out.
4. Spiders
Funnel-webs are present in the Illawarra escarpment, redbacks love undisturbed sheds and outdoor furniture, white-tails are common inside homes. Most aren’t dangerous, but the venomous ones need respect.
- Prevention: regular vacuuming, knock down webs, control the insect populations spiders feed on.
5. Silverfish
Tiny, scaly insects that eat paper, fabric and starches. Common in damp Illawarra bathrooms and laundries.
- Prevention: dehumidifier in humid rooms, ventilate bathrooms, store paper and clothing in sealed containers.
Six prevention basics for Illawarra homes
- Keep it clean — vacuum, wipe surfaces, take out the bin.
- Seal entry points — caulk small cracks, steel wool for larger gaps, mesh on weep holes.
- Store food properly — airtight containers, including pet food.
- Eliminate moisture — fix leaks, dehumidify, ventilate damp rooms.
- Trim vegetation — keep plants off the house, mulch and firewood away from the slab.
- Annual inspection — catches termite and rodent issues before they cost thousands.
